Dermal Filler Aftercare -- Your Complete Guide
You have just had dermal filler treatment. Now what? Proper aftercare plays a significant role in your results and recovery. This guide covers everything you need to know in the days and weeks following your filler appointment at our Knightsbridge clinic.
Immediately After Treatment (Day 0)
Right after your filler injections, you can expect:
- Swelling: This is normal and expected. The treated area will look fuller than the final result. Lip filler swelling is typically the most noticeable.
- Redness at injection sites: Small red dots where the needle entered. These fade within hours.
- Mild tenderness: The area may feel sore when touched, similar to a bruise.
- Asymmetry: Due to uneven swelling, one side may look different from the other. This is temporary.
Do not assess your results on the day of treatment. Swelling will distort the true outcome.
Day-by-Day Recovery Timeline
Days 1-2: Peak Swelling
Swelling usually peaks 24-48 hours after treatment. You may look noticeably fuller than expected. This is especially common with lip fillers, where patients sometimes feel anxious about the size. Trust the process – this is temporary.
Cold compresses (wrapped in cloth, never directly on skin) can help reduce swelling. Apply for 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off.
Days 3-5: Swelling Subsides
Most swelling resolves within 3-5 days. You will start to see a more accurate reflection of your results. Minor bruising may become visible as swelling decreases.
Days 7-14: Final Result
By two weeks, swelling has fully settled and the filler has integrated with your tissue. This is when you can properly assess your results. If you have any concerns about symmetry or volume, this is the time to discuss them with your practitioner.
What to Avoid After Dermal Fillers
First 24 Hours
- Do not touch, press, or massage the treated area unless specifically instructed by your practitioner
- Avoid strenuous exercise – increased heart rate and blood pressure can worsen swelling and bruising
- Avoid alcohol – thins the blood and increases bruising risk
- Avoid extreme heat – no saunas, hot baths, or sunbeds
- Avoid applying makeup to the injection sites (risk of infection)
First 48 Hours
- Avoid dental procedures – dental work involves manipulating facial muscles that could displace filler
- Avoid facials, chemical peels, or laser treatments in the treated area
- Sleep on your back if possible, to avoid pressure on the treated area
- Avoid blood-thinning medications (aspirin, ibuprofen) unless prescribed for a medical condition. Paracetamol is fine for pain relief.
First 2 Weeks
- Avoid facial massages or aggressive skincare routines around the treated area
- Avoid long-haul flights if possible – cabin pressure changes can affect swelling
- Minimise sun exposure and always wear SPF
Managing Common Side Effects
Swelling
- Apply cold compresses (10 minutes on, 10 minutes off)
- Sleep with your head slightly elevated on the first night
- Avoid salty foods, which can increase water retention and swelling
- Stay hydrated
Bruising
- Arnica cream or tablets may help speed recovery (available at pharmacies)
- Avoid alcohol and blood thinners
- Concealer can be applied after 24 hours if needed
- Most bruises fade within 5-7 days
Lumps or Bumps
- Small lumps are common in the first few days, especially with lip fillers
- They usually settle as the filler integrates (within 1-2 weeks)
- Gentle massage may help, but only if your practitioner has advised it
- If lumps persist beyond 2 weeks, contact your clinic
Tenderness
- Paracetamol is safe to take for pain relief
- Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen as they increase bruising risk
- Tenderness typically resolves within a few days
When to Contact Your Practitioner
Most side effects are normal and temporary. However, contact your clinic immediately if you experience:
- Severe or worsening pain that is not improving after 48 hours
- Skin colour changes – white, grey, or dusky discolouration near the injection site (this can indicate vascular compromise and needs urgent attention)
- Vision changes – blurred vision, double vision, or visual disturbances after filler near the eyes
- Excessive swelling that continues to worsen after day 3
- Signs of infection – increasing redness, warmth, pus, or fever
- Hard, painful lumps that do not improve after 2 weeks
These complications are rare when fillers are performed by qualified practitioners, but it is important to know the warning signs.
How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?
Dermal filler longevity depends on the product used, the treatment area, and your metabolism:
- Lip fillers: 6-12 months
- Cheek fillers: 12-18 months
- Chin fillers: 12-18 months
- Nasolabial folds: 9-12 months
Your practitioner will advise when to book a top-up appointment. Most patients return every 9-12 months for maintenance.
Maintaining Your Results
To get the most from your dermal filler treatment:
- Consistent skincare: Cleanse, moisturise, and use SPF daily
- Stay hydrated: Water supports skin health and filler integration
- Avoid smoking: Smoking accelerates filler breakdown and skin ageing
- Regular top-ups: Maintaining results requires less product than the initial treatment
