IPL Treatment Knightsbridge
What Is IPL Treatment?
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a versatile light-based treatment that uses broad-spectrum light to target various skin concerns. Unlike laser treatments that use a single wavelength, IPL delivers multiple wavelengths of light simultaneously, allowing it to treat multiple conditions in one session.
The light energy is absorbed by specific colour targets in the skin — melanin (pigment), haemoglobin (blood vessels), or the hair follicle — depending on the treatment goal.
How Does IPL Work?
IPL devices deliver pulses of broad-spectrum light through a handpiece placed against the skin. The light energy is absorbed by the target chromophore:
- For pigmentation: Light breaks down melanin clusters, which are then naturally cleared by the body
- For redness/veins: Light coagulates blood in visible vessels, which are reabsorbed over time
- For hair removal: Light damages the hair follicle to inhibit future growth
- For skin rejuvenation: Light stimulates collagen production and improves skin texture
A typical IPL session takes 20-45 minutes depending on the treatment area. You may feel a brief snapping sensation (like a rubber band) during treatment, but most patients tolerate it well.
What Can IPL Treat?
IPL is highly effective for:
- Sun damage and pigmentation: Age spots, sun spots, freckles, uneven skin tone
- Redness and thread veins: Rosacea, facial flushing, broken capillaries, thread veins
- Hair removal: Permanent reduction on most body areas (most effective on dark hair, light skin)
- Acne: Reduces active acne and acne scarring
- Skin rejuvenation: Improves overall skin texture, reduces pore size, enhances radiance
IPL vs Other Treatments
IPL vs LED Facial: LED uses specific wavelengths at lower energy for gentle, cumulative results. IPL is more powerful, targets specific chromophores, and often shows faster results. IPL may require downtime; LED has none.
IPL vs Chemical Peel: Chemical peels exfoliate the skin’s surface. IPL targets deeper pigmentation and vascular concerns without surface trauma. They can be combined for enhanced results.
IPL vs Laser: Laser uses a single wavelength for precision. IPL covers a broader range simultaneously, making it more versatile but slightly less precise than dedicated laser systems.
What to Expect During Treatment
An IPL session at our Knightsbridge clinic:
- Consultation: Your practitioner assesses your skin and discusses your goals
- Preparation: The treatment area is cleansed and a cooling gel is applied
- Treatment: The IPL handpiece delivers pulses of light — you will feel brief snapping sensations
- Aftercare: Cooling gel is removed, SPF is applied. Your skin may be slightly red and warm
A course of 3-6 treatments (spaced 4-6 weeks apart) is typically required for optimal results, depending on the concern being treated.
Is There Any Downtime?
IPL has minimal downtime:
- Redness and warmth: Typically resolves within hours to a day
- Pigmentation darkening: Treated pigment spots may appear darker before they fade (this is normal — they flake off naturally over 1-2 weeks)
- Avoid sun exposure: SPF is essential for 2-4 weeks after treatment
- Avoid heat: No saunas, hot baths, or strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours
Who Is a Good Candidate for IPL?
IPL works best on lighter skin types (Fitzpatrick I-III) with dark hair or distinct pigmentation concerns. It is less effective on darker skin tones where the light may be absorbed by surrounding tissue rather than the target.
Your practitioner will assess your skin type and concerns during consultation to determine whether IPL is the right treatment for you, or whether an alternative like LED or chemical peel would be more appropriate.
